Kiln-dried oak burns slowly and steadily, producing intense, long-lasting heat with very little smoke or maintenance.

Key Burning Characteristics

  • Low Moisture Content: Dried to a moisture level below 20% (often 15–18%), allowing it to light more easily and burn efficiently right away.
  • Long Burn Time: High density gives oak a very slow burn rate, meaning logs last much longer in a wood burner or open fire than softwoods or less dense hardwoods.
  • Heat Output: Delivers a high calorific value (around 4.2 to 4.5 kWh/kg) that produces a steady, powerful, and deep warmth.
  • Flame and Embers: Produces an initial steady flame before settling into a long-lasting, glowing bed of hot embers.
  • Clean Combustion: Generates very little smoke, soot, or unburned creosote when burned correctly with adequate airflow.

Tips for Burning

Establish the Fire First: Because oak is dense, start your fire with plenty of fine, dry kindling to build a strong bed of heat before adding larger oak logs.
Maintain Airflow: Do not shut down your stove's air controls too quickly; oak needs sufficient oxygen to maintain clean and efficient combustion.
